La orden de San Francisco y la muerte: una introducción documental

Resumen: A partir de la edición de un testamento datado en la segunda mitad del siglo XV y acompañado de diferentes fuentes documentales y de bibliografía complementaria se buscará hacer un trabajo desde la perspectiva de la historia de las mentalidades incidiendo en el tema de la muerte y su relación con el franciscanismo gallego medieval y la religiosidad popular. Se tratará de elaborar no simplemente la edición y el comentario de una fuente inédita junto con otros datos sacados de libros, fuentes y de ediciones documentales, sino también estudiar y comprender la historia de la gente común y de sus inquietudes espirituales en una época en la que el miedo, no tanto a la muerte, sino sobre todo a lo que sería el destino del alma estaba a la orden del día; temor que era preciso conjurar mediante la fe y la oración en vida y la intercesión ante Dios tras la muerte por parte de la Virgen María, abogada y mediadora de los cristianos por excelencia, y de diferentes arcángeles, ángeles y santos como el arcángel Gabriel, San Miguel, Santo Domingo o San Francisco de Asís, el cual iría al Purgatorio a recoger los espíritus de aquellos que le hubiesen sido devotos, devoción que se reflejaba mediante un lugar de enterramiento en alguno de sus conventos, la predicación de los frailes por el fallecido o el uso de un hábito franciscano como mortaja.

Abstract: From the edition of a will dated on the second half of the 15th century and accompanied of different documentary sources and complementary bibliography we?ll seek to make a paper from the perspective of the mentality?s history focusing on the topic of the death and its relation with the medieval Galician franciscanism and the popular religiosity. We will seek to make not just the edition and explanation of an unpublished source with another date taken from books and other sources, both published and unpublished, but also we will seek to study and understand the history of the common people and it?s spiritual worries in an age on which fear, not just to the death but, above all, what will be the destiny of the soul was the order of the day; fear which was necessary to conjure up through faith and praying in life and the intercession before God after death of the Virgin Mary, the lawyer and mediating character of the Christians by excellence, and the archangels and the different saints, such as the Archangel Gabriel, Saint Michael, Saint Dominic and Saint Francis of Assisi, who will go to the Purgatory and collect the spirits of those people who had been devoted to him, a devotion which was reflected in the choice of Franciscan convent as a place to be bury, the predication of the friars in honor of the deceased person or using a Franciscan habit as a shroud.
